Who We Are

HOBY was founded in 1958 by the actor Hugh O'Brian after a visit to Africa with humanitarian Albert Schweitzer. HOBY Nebraska is a non-profit, 501(c)(3)tax-exempt organization registered with the Nebraska Secretary of State's office.

What We Do

Leadership Seminars:

Each year, HOBY invites the principals of all high schools to select their single most outstanding sophomore to attend the state Leadership Seminar. From the panhandle to the city, outstanding leaders from the entire state of Nebraska join together for a leadership seminar.

The program includes stimulating panel discussions on the topics of education, media, volunteerism, entrepreneurship, government, diversity, and more. HOBY seminars are designed to enhance students' leadership, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making abilities, and to provide the skills needed to be of service to others.

Leadership for Service:

During the leadership seminar, the HOBY Ambassadors complete a community service project together. At the completion of each seminar, each student pledges to complete 100 more hours of their own time contributing to their local communities.

World Leadership Congress:

At each seminar across the country, students are selected be seminar volunteers to attend HOBY's World Leadership Conference (WLC). At the WLC, these young leaders are joined by outstanding high school sophomores from around the world for an eight-day program.

"My parents tell me that they can see that HOBY has made a positive impact on my life. It has definitely changed me in ways that I never thought imaginable. There once was a time in my life that I um...'wasn't traveling on the right path.' The opportunity to go to HOBY was literally a lifesaver for me. HOBY has changed me. It has put that 'burning desire' in me to go out in the world and do something great. I now see my future full of new places and things to explore, instead of a bunch of barbed wire and 'no trespassing' signs posted everywhere."

-Anita Moorhead, Ogallala, NE
Former HOBY Ambassador

"As an alumnus whose life has continuously been impacted by HOBY - I hold a great deal of admiration for the volunteers of HOBY. In fact, the magic of the weekend is what brought me in, but it is the magic of the people involved with this organization that keeps me going."

-Adam Rogers
Former HOBY National Director of Alumni
